MLB: Detroit 5, Baltimore 1

DETROIT, June 17 (UPI) -- Max Scherzer improved to 10-0 with six innings of one-run ball Monday and the Detroit Tigers hung a 5-1 defeat on Baltimore.

Scherzer is unbeaten in 14 starts this season and racked up his third win in three appearances with the 113-pitch performance, during which he allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out 10.

The right-hander, who has logged 116 strikeouts over 96 1/3 innings this season, fanned at least 10 batters for the fifth time this season.

Miguel Cabrera put Detroit ahead to stay with a two-run homer in the first inning, his 19th of the year, and Austin Jackson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the American League Central-leading Tigers.

Orioles starter Jake Arrieta (1-2) was tagged for five runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 frames.

Chris Davis cracked his MLB-best 24th round-tripper as Baltimore dropped the opener of a three-game series.
