LONDON, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Sunday's highlights from the Olympics:
-- Usain Bolt answered any questions about his readiness by crushing the opposition and winning the Olympic 100-meter dash for the second straight time. He lost to Jamaican countryman Yohan Blake in their Olympic trials this summer and Blake equaled the fastest time he has ever run on Sunday with a 9.75. Bolt, however, ran a 9.63 -- just 0.05 off his world record.
-- Andy Murray of Britain defeated Roger Federer of Switzerland to win the singles gold medal. The two played on Wimbledon's Centre Court, where they had met a month ago. On that occasion Federer won his 17th major championship. This time he crumbled as the consistent Federer rolled to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 victory. Murray then said he hoped the happy home fans would stay around and watch him team with Laura Robson in an attempt to win the mixed doubles title as well. The crowd stayed, but Federer and Robson lost.
-- China regained the lead from the United States in gold medals (30 to 28) and overall medals (61 to 60) with the only American triumphs during the day coming from Serena and Venus Williams in the doubles final and from Sanya Richards-Ross in the 400-meter run.
-- Women competed for the first time in Olympic boxing and a man with artificial legs ran for the first time in a track semifinal. South Africa's Oscar Pistorius, whose legs were amputated when he was less than a year ago, made it through his qualifying heats on Saturday, but he ran last on Sunday in a bid to make the finals.
-- Britain's Ben Ainslie, who had been trailing in sailing's Finn class since the first two races were held a week earlier, moved in front for the first time in the medal race and won his third straight Olympic gold in that type of boat. He has four gold medals overall and five medals in total, more than any other sailor in the history of the Games.
-- China completed a sweep of the badminton gold medals (five of them) and won for the fifth time in five diving events on the way to a possible eight for eight. Sunday's diving winner -- Wu Minxia -- has won six Olympic medals. No diver has ever won more.
-- A female triple jumper from Kazakhstan won her event and extended what is a special record for her country. It was the sixth medal of these Olympics for Kazakhstan and all of them have been gold. There is still a way to go, but no other country has ever finished an Olympics with that many gold medals without having had at least a few silver or bronze ones as well.
-- On the opposite side of the fence, Japan has just two gold medals heading into the second week of the Olympics. But the Japanese have 12 silver medals and 13 bronze ones, an astonishing number for a nation that has had such a hard time getting to the top of the podium.
