Langer surges into U.S. Senior Open lead

ORION, Mich., July 14 (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer surged into a four-stroke lead at the U.S. Senior Open Saturday thanks to a sizzling round of 6-under 64.

Langer, who hasn't won a Champions Tour event since February 2011, came within two strokes of equaling the 54-hole scoring record, ending at 10-under 200.

Moving into a share of second place was Tom Pernice Jr., who registered a 4-under 66 on the Old Course at Indianwood Golf and Country Club.

That performance put him at 6-under 204, tying him with Tom Lehman, Roger Chapman, John Huston and Corey Pavin -- all of whom shot 68s.

One shot further back at minus-5 were Fred Couples (65), Fred Funk (67), Jay Haas (68) and Dick Mast (69).
