Haas, Rosol advance in Stuttgart

STUTTGART, Germany, July 10 (UPI) -- German crowd favorite Tommy Haas and Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic were among the first-round winners Tuesday at the Mercedes Cup tennis event.

Eighth-seeded Haas, the former world No. 2, rallied to get past Russian Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on the clay courts at TC Weissenhof.

The 34-year-old Haas -- the Stuttgart runner-up in 1999 -- bested Swiss superstar and Wimbledon champ Roger Federer in the finale of the Halle tournament in Germany last month.

Rosol -- who stunned Rafael Nadal in a second-round match at Wimbledon two weeks ago -- fired 12 aces to upend fifth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase 6-4, 7-5.

Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe pulled out another upset Tuesday, bouncing seventh-seeded Pole Lukasz Kubot 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.

Also logging Day 2 wins were Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Benoit Paire, Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil and Slovakian qualifier Pavol Cervenak.
