MLB: Philadelphia 9, Chicago Cubs 2

CHICAGO, May 16 (UPI) -- Carlos Ruiz put Philadelphia in front with an eighth-inning homer Wednesday and the Phillies scored six times in the ninth to down the Chicago Cubs 9-2.

A two-run homer by Alfonso Soriano in the fourth was enough to keep the Cubs in the game until the final two innings. Ruiz, however, put Philadelphia in front with a one-out, solo blast off Shawn Camp (2-2) and the Phillies broke it open with a big ninth that included a grand slam homer by Hector Luna.

Luna was recalled last Friday and his pinch-hit appearance Wednesday was only his second at-bat of the season. He has 14 home runs in 195 at-bats over parts of seven seasons with five teams.

The win went to Jose Contreras (1-0), who worked a perfect seventh in relief of Kyle Kendrick. It was the first victory for Contreras since Aug. 1, 2010.

Philadelphia pitchers retired the final 17 Chicago batters of the game after Soriano's homer.
