NEW YORK, April 28 (UPI) -- Rookie Drew Smyly earned his first major league victory Saturday, taming the Yankees over six innings in the Detroit Tigers' 7-5 win over New York.
Smyly (1-0) allowed only one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out seven as the Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak.
Andy Dirks socked a three-run homer in the first inning and Miguel Cabrera added three RBI, including a two-run single in the second inning that posted the Tigers to an early 6-1 lead.
Cabrera later hit a solo homer as the Tigers shook off the loss of outfielder Delmon Young to even their three-game series at Yankee Stadium.
Young was put on the restricted list Saturday following an arrest on charges he hurled an anti-Semitic remark at a group of men outside a New York hotel and physically attacked one of them.
Young, who was hospitalized for alcohol intoxication following the alleged incident, was released on $5,000 bond Saturday.
New York's Freddie Garcia (0-2) was pounded for six runs on five hits over just 1 2/3 innings.
Nick Swisher knocked a pair of solo homers, and Curtis Granderson added solo shot and an RBI single for the Yankees.
