Goerges wins during long day in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, April 12 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Julia Goerges was one of five three-set winners Thursday in the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open tennis tournament in Spain.

Goerges battled for 2 hours, 20 minutes in getting past world No. 144 Garbine Muguruza Blanco 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Goerges had 11 service breaks in 16 games to overcome nine dropped service games of her own.

The Goerges match was the second shortest Thursday in Barcelona where the crowd was treated to nearly 12 hours of tennis over five matches.

Third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova had nine breaks -- against eight service games lost -- in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision over Klara Zakopalova but qualifier Yuliya Beygelzimer ousted fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

Olga Govortsova topped Laura Pous-Tio 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 in the day's longest match (3:01) and Sorana Cirstea beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the shortest (1:37).

Govortsova will take on Cirstea and Cibulkova plays Beygelzimer in the quarterfinals Friday in the top half of the draw. Goerges plays seventh-seeded Sara Errani and Simon Halep meets Carla Suarez Navarro in the others.
