BARCELONA, Spain, April 10 (UPI) -- Olga Govortsova ousted top-seeded Francesca Schiavone during first-round play Tuesday at the Barcelona Ladies Open tennis tournament in Spain.
Govortsova posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Schiavone by winning 51 percent of the points and getting five breaks when Schiavone served. The difference was more pronounced in the second set when Govortsova won 57 percent of the points when receiving serve.
No. 2-seeded Julia Goerges won nearly two-thirds of the points in the concluding set of a 6-4, 6-0 win over Aravane Rezai. Goerges converted two break-point chances in the first set and was 3-of-4 in break-point opportunities in the second.
Third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova routed Iryna Bremond 6-0, 6-3 and No. 5-seeded Flavia Pennetta defeated Lara Arruabarrena-Vaci 6-0, 6-4 in other matches involving seeded players.
Also Tuesday, Laura Pous-Tio beat Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova 6-1, 6-2; Klara Zakopalova ousted Laura Thorpe 6-3, 6-4; Yuliya Beygelzimer got by Alexandra Cadantu 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); Carla Suarez Navarro advanced 6-3, 6-1 over Annalisa Bona; Estrella Cabeza Candela defeated Nina Bratchikova 6-2, 7-5; and Lourdes Dominguez-Lino stopped Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1, 6-2.
