Venus Williams, a wild-card entry, reached the third round by ousting No. 3 seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Williams will meet Aleksandra Wozniak, who got past Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Madison Keys, but there were a host of surprises.
