Czechs beat Italy 4-1 in Davis Cup series

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Simone Bolelli's straight-set win Sunday marked Italy only point against the Czech Republic, which took the Davis Cup first-round series.

The Czech used singles wins Friday from Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych and a doubles win Saturday by Berdych and Stepanek to clinch the best-of-five series. That put the Czechs into the April Davis Cup quarterfinals against Serbia, which defeated Sweden in its first-round series.

Lukas Rosol boosted the Czechs to a 4-0 lead with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andreas Seppi before Bolelli avoided the shutout with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Frantisek Cermak.

Bolelli lost nine points over 10 service games and saved both break points he faced against Cermak. He had just 12 unforced errors in the match.

Rosol amassed 54 winners in his match with Seppi. He didn't convert any of his thee first-set break chances but was cashed on his only break chances in both the second and third sets.
