MLB: Kansas City 10, Detroit 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Eric Hosmer went 5-for-5 with a three-run homer Tuesday, leading a 16-hit attack in the Kansas City Royals' 10-2 rout of Detroit.

Hosmer's blast capped a six-run fourth inning that handed Kansas City a 7-0 lead over the American League Central champs.

Salvador Perez provided a two-run homer and an RBI single among his three hits and Melky Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a run-scoring hit for the Royals, who claimed the first contest of a two-game series.

Luis Mendoza (1-0) logged his first major league win since 2008 after being recalled Sunday from Class AAA Omaha, holding the Tigers to one earned run on six hits over seven innings.

Detroit's Brad Penny (10-11) was rocked for seven runs on 10 hits in a four-inning start.

Austin Jackson and Delmon Young drove in runs for the Tigers, who lost for only the third time in 17 games.
