Monfils wins twice at Legg Mason

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Top seed Gael Monfils was one of three players who won twice during a long day of tennis Thursday, giving him a quarterfinal berth in the Legg Mason Classic.

Rain forced postponement of six matches Wednesday, bringing about a busy day of action Thursday.

Monfils first defeated Ryan Sweeting 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and he then outlasted Dmitry Tursunov 6-2, 7-6 (11-9). Tursunov was also playing his second match of the day.

Marcos Baghdatis and Donald Young won twice as well Thursday, victories that set up a meeting between them in the quarterfinals.

Baghdatis began the day with a 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 win over Somdev Devvarman and he then downed Thomaz Bellucci 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Young advanced when Jurgen Melzer retired in the second set of their match and then beat Michael Russell 6-3, 6-3.

John Isner, who was able to get his second-round match in Wednesday, reached the quarterfinals by ousting James Blake 7-6 (7-0), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Isner will face Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals after Troicki defeated Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3.
