Davydenko ends losing streak

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Nikolay Davydenko ended a four-match losing streak Wednesday by reaching the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

Rain forced postponement of six second-round matches, including the scheduled battle between top-seeded Gael Monfils and Ryan Sweeting.

Davydenko, the No. 9 seed, lost in the second round at the French Open, the first round at Wimbledon and the opening round of his next two events. He received a bye past the first round in this tournament before posting a 6-3, 7-5 victory Wednesday over Matthew Ebden.

Davydenko will next meet Fernando Verdasco, who was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Marinko Matosevic.

In other completed matches, Radek Stepanek downed Wayne Odesnik 6-1, 6-1; Viktor Troicki got past Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-2; and Michael Russell advanced when Xavier Malisse retired in the second set.

No. 4 seed Jurgen Melzer also retired in the third set, allowing Donald Young to move on to the third round.
