No. 1 Donald takes shortened Scottish Open

INVERNESS, Scotland, July 10 (UPI) -- Top-ranked Luke Donald shot into the lead with a 9-under 63 Sunday, bypassing a crowded leaderboard to win the rain-shortened Scottish Open.

Donald gained his first title as the world No. 1, finishing 54 holes at 19-under 197. The victory ensures the Briton will remain on top for next week's British Open, when he'll try for his first major championship.

Donald's performance allowed him to win by four shots over Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed (10-under 62).

Tied for third at minus-14 were Martin Wiegele (65), Lorenzo Gagli (66) and Mark Tullo (66).

Donald's round began at 7 a.m. Sunday as he completed the remaining nine holes of Friday's rain-delayed second round and then play the third and final round after Saturday's action was completely washed out.

Donald's win was his third of the season on the European Tour, adding to his titles at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship and the BMW PGA Championship.

Former European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie failed to qualify for the British Open for the first time since 1989 after firing a 2-under 70 to tie for 31st place at minus-10.
