Nadal No. 1, Djokovic a very close second

LONDON, June 6 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal retained the world No. 1 ranking in men's tennis and Novak Djokovic pulled very close to taking over the top spot.

Nadal defeated Roger Federer in four sets Sunday at the final of the French Open. It was his 10th Grand Slam title -- a record-tying six of which have come at Roland Garros in Paris.

Perhaps just as big a factor for Nadal came Friday when Federer became the first player this year to beat Djokovic, taking their semifinal in four sets. A win in that match would have locked up the No. 1 spot for Djokovic.

Nadal remains at 12,070 rankings points while Djokovic pulled within 45 points -- the number of points Nadal is protecting at this week's Queen's Club tournament as the grass-court season begins.

Federer is third with 9,230 points while Andy Murray (6,625) is fourth and Robin Soderling (4,595) is fifth. The Top five players all advanced at least to the quarterfinals in Paris.

The second tier of the rankings is completely changed. David Ferrer (4,150) is up one place to sixth, switching places with Tomas Berdych (3,490) and Gael Monfils (2,780) is also up one spot to eighth. Americans Mardy Fish (2,440) and Andy Roddick (2,200) complete the Top 10. Fish's No. 9 ranking marks a career best.

Jurgen Melzer fell three places to 11th. He'd been a semifinalist in 2010 at the French Open but went out in the second round this year, resulting in a net loss of 675 rankings points.
