MLB: Kansas City 5, Seattle 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 14 (UPI) -- Bruce Chen allowed only one unearned run through eight innings Thursday and the Kansas City Royals posted a rain-shortened 5-1 victory over Seattle.

Chen (2-0) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out one for the Royals, who were leading after 7 1/2 innings when the umpires called the game following a lengthy rain delay.

Wilson Betemit socked a solo homer and added sacrifice fly while Alex Gordon drove in a pair of runs with a third-inning single for Kansas City, which improved to 9-4 at the start of the season.

Doug Fister (0-3) surrendered five runs on eight hits over seven frames for the Mariners, walking one and striking out five.

Adam Kennedy drove in Seattle's only run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
