NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- Curtis Granderson broke a tie with a seventh-inning home run Thursday that sent the New York Yankees off to a 6-3 win over Detroit in the teams' season opener.

Granderson connected off Tigers reliever Phil Coke (0-1) to break a 3-3 tie. The Yankees added a run without a hit in the inning when Russell Martin reached first on an error, advanced on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Derek Jeter sacrifice fly.

New York got an insurance run in the eighth when Nick Swisher singled in Alex Rodriguez.

Joba Chamberlain (1-0) pitched the seventh inning in picking up the win and Mariano Rivera collected the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Mark Teixeira gave the Yankees the lead in the third inning with a three-run home run that scored Martin and Jeter.

Detroit got to New York starter CC Sabathia for three runs off six hits over six innings. Sabathia walked two and struck out seven.

The Tigers scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Jhonny Peralta had a sacrifice fly for the first Detroit run while Brandon Inge singled in a run in the fourth and Austin Jackson scored on Miguel Cabrera's sacrifice fly in the fifth.
