Goalie Varlamov name NHL's top star

NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Young Washington Capitals goaltender Semyon Varlamov was named the NHL's No. 1 star of the week Monday.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom filled out the league's "Three Stars" for the week ended Sunday.

Varlamov, 22, post two wins during the week. He allowed one goal on 33 shots in the Capitals' 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in the 2011 Winter Classic and shut out Montreal.

Doan scored five goals and assisted on three others in four games, reaching the 700 career points plateau.

Lidstrom tallied eight points last week (two goals, six assists).
