NHL: Boston 3, Philadelphia 0

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Tim Thomas earned his fifth shutout of the season with a 40-save effort Wednesday, leading the Boston Bruins to a 3-0 victory over Philadelphia.

In just 16 appearances this season, Thomas has already equaled the most shutouts he has ever had in one campaign. He recorded five shutouts in each of the last two seasons and has 22 during his seven-year career.

The Bruins ended a two-game skid and handed the Flyers their third straight loss.

Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring with a power-play goal 5:40 into the first period and Tyler Seguin made it a 2-0 contest after one stanza.

The only other goal was an empty-netter by Milan Lucic with 1:48 to play.

Thomas came into the game allowing 1.56 goals per game, best in the NHL. He blanked a team that was averaging 3.4 goals per contest, third best in the league.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots in the loss.
