NHL: Buffalo 5, New Jersey 4 (SO)

NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Derek Roy delivered the winning goal in the fourth round of a shootout Wednesday for a 5-4 Buffalo victory over New Jersey.

Roy attempted the first shot in the fourth round and he beat Johan Hedberg with a backhander. New Jersey star Ilya Kovalchuk then tried to keep things going, but he lost control of the puck as he neared Buffalo goaltender Jhonas Enroth.

The Sabres won for the fifth time in nine road games this season. They have yet to win at home in seven tries. New Jersey has also lost all seven of its home games.

Buffalo's Lindy Ruff enjoyed a victory in his 1,000th regular-season game as coach of the Sabres. He is the 18th coach in NHL history to reach that mark and he is only the third to do so with one team. His record is 488-370-142.

New Jersey had a 4-3 lead going into the third period, two of its goals coming from Jason Arnott. Tyler Ennis tied it 8:54 into the third.

Enroth made 28 saves to get the win. Hedberg stopped 38-of-42 shots.
