Federer back in Swiss Indoors quarterfinal

BASEL, Switzerland, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Roger Federer needed only 61 minutes Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.

Federer, the world No. 2-ranked player, lost seven points in his 10 service games during a 6-3, 6-4 win over Janko Tipsarevic. Federer has played a total of 113 minutes in winning his first two matches in Basel, his hometown.

Against Tipsarevic, Federer was extremely efficient, finishing off both break-point chances he had and winning 85 percent of the points off his serve.

Robin Haase eliminated No. 8-seeded John Isner in Wednesday's other second-round match. Haase fought off eight break points in a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 win over Isner. The players combined for 22 aces -- Isner firing 13 -- but Haase got two breaks in the first set and a third in the third set for the match.

Tobias Kamke, playing in place of Marcos Baghdatis, made the most of his lucky-loser status, knocking out No. 3-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-1 in a first-round match. Berdych didn't force a break point and lost his serve four times.

Also in the first round, No. 4-seeded Andy Roddick advanced by beating fellow American Sam Querrey 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Roddick won 80 percent of the points on serve.

Other Wednesday matches saw Radek Stepanek top Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); Paul-Henri Mathieu dump Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-3; and Jarkko Nieminen defeat Daniel brands 6-3, 6-2.
