Also Monday, eighth-seeded John Isner and qualifier Robin Haase each won and will meet in the second round.

Isner came from behind and beat Michael Llodra 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Llodra was serving for the match at 5-4 of the second set but Isner broke his serve twice to even the match. A break in the eighth game of the third set put Isner in position to win.

Haase was on the court just 63 minutes in topping Stephane Bohli 6-4, 6-3. Each player had seven aces but Haase managed three service breaks and didn't face a break point.

Federer has won the Swiss Indoors three of the last four years, dropping the 2009 final to Novak Djokovic in three sets. Djokovic is back to defend his title. In addition to Federer and Djokovic, the world No. 3, Top 10-ranked players Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick are in this week's field.
