Hushovd wins Tour de France stage

PORTE DU HAINAUT, France, July 6 (UPI) -- Thor Hushovd won the third stage of the 2010 Tour de France Tuesday and Fabian Cancellara took the yellow jersey as the overall leader.

Hushovd and several other riders caught Ryder Hesjedal, who led much of the stage, in the final miles and then out-sprinted the lead group of six to the finish line.

He finished the 128-mile route from Wanze, Belgium, to Porte du Hainaut, France, in 4 hours, 49 minutes, 38 seconds. Five other riders were clocked in the same time while Cancellara led a group across the finish line 53 seconds later.

Lance Armstrong was timed 2:08 behind Hushovd and Sylvain Chavanel, who had the overall lead going into Tuesday's stage, had bike trouble and finished in a group 3:58 behind Hushovd.

Cancellara's overall lead is 23 seconds over Geraint Thomas, with Cadel Evans in third 39 seconds off the pace. Hesjedal moved to fourth 46 seconds behind Cancellara and Chavanel is in fifth, 1:01 off the lead. Armstrong is in 18th place, 2:30 back of Cancellara.

Wednesday's stage of the Tour de France is a relatively short 92-mile run from Cambrai to Reims in northeastern France.
