Cancellara takes Tour de France prologue

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, July 3 (UPI) -- Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the prologue for the 2010 Tour de France in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Saturday, with Lance Armstrong finishing fourth.

Armstrong made a statement by finishing ahead of defending champion Alberto Contador and his other rivals for the general classification in the 5.5-mile course.

Contador ended the day in sixth on the rainy course.

German Tony Martin of the HTC-Columbia team clocked the best time for the majority of the day, traversing the course in 10 minutes, 10 seconds. Seven-time Tour de France champion Armstrong crossed the finish line in 10:22.

Cancellara of the Saxo Bank team finished in 10 minutes and Martin ended up second. David Millar of Garmin-Transitions was came in third at 10:20 while Armstrong and Geraint Thomas (Sky) completed the top five.

The 140-mile first stage of the Tour de France from Rotterdam to Brussels gets under way Sunday.
