MLB: San Diego 3, Washington 1

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Chase Headley homered and Tim Stauffer allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings Monday to help the San Diego Padres beat Washington 3-1.

Stauffer (3-6) gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out five, and Heath Bell got his 32nd save with a scoreless ninth.

David Eckstein and Kevin Kouzmanoff both had first-inning RBI doubles for the Padres.

Livan Hernandez (7-9) went the distance for the Nationals, yielding three runs on seven hits over eight innings to take the loss -- Washington's fourth straight setback.

Everth Cabrera opened the bottom of the first with a bunt single and scored on Eckstein's double. Eckstein came in on a two-bagger by Kouzmanoff to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Pete Orr drove in the Nationals' run with a third-inning RBI single.
