Safin, the 2005 champion, defeated Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 in his second-round match.

Federer has 13 major titles in his career and needs just one more Grand Slam title to equal the record set by American Pete Sampras.

Other second-round winners Wednesday included Serbian Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer of Spain, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, Marin Cilic of Croatia, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, Tommy Robredo of Spain and Bosnian-born American Amer Delic.
