ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Clutch pitching by James Shields and the Tampa Bay bullpen Thursday carried the Rays to a 4-2 win over Philadelphia, tying the World Series at a game each.

For the second straight game, the Phillies consistently wasted scoring chances. Tampa Bay scratched out enough runs to record the franchise's first World Series win.

With the series deadlocked at 1-1, Philadelphia will be at home for three games beginning Saturday. If neither team sweeps those three contests, the series will return to Florida next Wednesday.

One night after scoring only three of its 15 base runners in a 3-2 victory, Philadelphia put 13 runners on base Thursday and managed only two late runs.

Shields worked around seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, after which Dan Wheeler and David Price protected the Rays' lead.

Philadelphia broke a 12-inning scoring drought with a solo homer by Eric Bruntlett off Price in the eighth. Price allowed another run in the ninth on a double by Carlos Ruiz and a hard-hit grounder by Jayson Werth that glanced off the glove of Evan Longoria into left field for an error.

Three of Tampa Bay's runs, meanwhile, came on outs.

Akinori Iwamura walked off Brett Myers to open the Rays' first and B.J. Upton singled to right. When Werth mishandled the ball in right, the runners moved to second and third and then scored on consecutive ground outs by Carlos Pena and Longoria.

Upton singled in Dioner Navarro from third with two away in the second and Jason Bartlett's safety squeeze bunt in the fourth delivered Cliff Floyd to make it 4-0.

Philadelphia has put at least one runner on base in 16 of the 18 innings played thus far, but has only a split to show for it.
