MLB: N.Y. Yankees 6, Boston 2 (1st game)

BOSTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Right-hander Mike Mussina led the New York Yankees to a 6-2 win over Boston in the opener of a doubleheader Sunday, notching his 20th victory of the season.

The 39-year-old Mussina (20-9) allowed three hits and two walks in six innings.

Mussina reached the 20-win mark for the first time in his career. He had won 19 twice while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles.

Xavier Nady had a three-run home run for the Yankees, who finished the season with nine wins in 10 games but missed the playoffs.

Jacoby Ellsbury hit an RBI single for Boston, which heads into the playoffs against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-3) took the loss, giving up three runs and four hits in four innings.
