MLB: San Diego 2, Chi. Cubs 1

SAN DIEGO, June 5 (UPI) -- Kevin Kouzmanoff's sacrifice fly delivered the go-ahead run in the eighth Wednesday, allowing the San Diego Padres to end the Chicago Cubs' winning streak 2-1.

The Cubs had won nine in a row and were seeking their first 10-game streak in seven years.

Chicago's Ted Lilly and San Diego's Greg Maddux battled to a 1-1 tie through seven innings before Brian Giles opened the Padres' eighth with a double. After Giles moved to third on a fly ball to left by Adrian Gonzalez, Carlos Marmol came on to relieve Lilly (5-5).

Kouzmanoff greeted Marmol with a fly to center that was deep enough to bring Giles home with the eventual winning run.

Heath Bell (3-3) worked the top of the eighth to get the victory and Trevor Hoffman was summoned in the ninth to pick up his 12th save.

Maddux gave up three hits and struck out four in a no-decision effort.
