MLB: Toronto 7, Boston 4

TORONTO, April 6 (UPI) -- A grand slam home run by Frank Thomas in the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday carried the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Thomas' second round-tripper in the new season snapped a 2-2 tie and ruined the 2008 debut of right-hander Josh Beckett.

Vernon Wells belted a two-run homer in the fourth. Aaron Hill scored once, had one RBI and produced two of Toronto's five hits.

Winning pitcher Roy Halladay (1-1) surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and one walk in eight innings with six strikeouts. Closer Jeremy Accardo hurled a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.

Boston got solo homers from Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Varitek and J.D. Drew. David Ortiz added an RBI single.

Beckett (0-1), activated off the 15-day disabled list (back strain) before the game, gave up five earned runs on three hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings with four walks. He recorded six strikeouts.
