MLB: Toronto 5, N.Y. Yankees 2

NEW YORK, April 3 (UPI) -- A.J. Burnett carried a shutout into the seventh inning Wednesday and Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer in bringing Toronto a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees.

Burnett (1-0) allowed five hits, one of them a two-run blast by Alex Rodriguez in the seventh. Toronto got four early runs off Mike Mussina (0-1).

Jeremy Accardo worked out of trouble in the ninth to pick up the save on a night when temperatures fell into the low 40s with a gusty wind.

Mussina gave up eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Toronto scored an unearned run in the first when David Eckstein reached first on a fielding error by first baseman Jason Giambi. Eckstein later scored on a single by Alex Rios.

Walls delivered his homer in the third to make it 3-0.

New York could not move a runner past first base until the seventh, when it scored its two runs.
