Mike Smith, starting in goal one day after Tampa Bay acquired him from Dallas, allowed three goals on 27 shots. It was the Lightning's fifth straight loss.

Just before the trading deadline, Smith was sent to Tampa Bay along with forwards Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern and a future draft pick for center Brad Richards and former starting goaltender Johan Holmqvist.

Smith, one of the top backup goalies in the league, had been 12-9-0 with Dallas this season.

Minnesota scored twice in just over a minute early in the first period.
