NHL: San Jose 2, Pittsburgh 1 (SO)

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Jeremy Roenick scored in the third round of a shootout Sunday, handing the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh.

There was no scoring in overtime after regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

San Jose's Jonathan Cheechoo and Pittsburgh's Erik Christensen traded third-period goals after a scoreless duel over the first two periods. Cheechoo's 18th at 3:10 was the game's first score and Christensen's ninth at 10:02 tied it.

San Jose won the shootout 3-2 after getting goals from Joe Pavleski, Cheechoo and Roenick. Pittsburgh's shootout goals were scored by Christensen and Jarko Ruutu.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 20 of 21 shots, while Joe Thornton added his 54th assist this season for the Sharks, who have won two in a row following a five-game losing streak.

Ty Conklin was beaten once after 37 San Jose shots in regulation for the Penguins, who have lost two straight.

The start of the game was delayed nearly 25 minutes due to a Zamboni malfunction during warm-ups.
