Vesa Toskala made 19 saves for Toronto, which had won two straight.

The only score came 8:56 into the third period. Gaustad was stationed to the left of Toskala and took Daniel Paille's pass from behind the net before flipping it over the goaltender's left shoulder.

Toronto could not take advantage of a two-man advantage over the final two minutes.

Buffalo forward Jason Pominville had a career-high, eight-game point streak snapped.
