Gaborik tops NHL player-of-the-week awards

NEW YORK, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Minnesota forward Marian Gaborik, who led the NHL with six goals last week, was selected the top NHL player of the week.

Joining Gaborik in the NHL weekly honors were Atlanta goaltender Kari Lehtonen and Nashville forward Jason Arnott. Players were considered for efforts in games Dec. 17-23.

Gaborik piled up six goals and two assists for the Wild. Five of the goals came last Thursday against the New York Rangers. He was the first player to have five goals in an NHL game since Detroit's Sergei Fedorov turned the trick in 1996.

Lehtonen won all four of the Predators' games he played in last week, posting a 1.96 goals-against average. He also saved 93.5 percent of the shots fired his way.

Arnott had four goals and four assists on the week. He leads the Predators with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in 33 games this season.
