NHL: Montreal 5, Washington 2

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Guillaume Latendresse recorded his first two-goal game this season Thursday to help the Montreal Canadiens beat the Washington Capitals 5-2.

His eighth goal came on the power play at 18:15 of the first period on the power play to give Montreal a quick 1-0 lead, and his ninth came at 17:06 of the second increased the lead to 3-1.

Montreal also got one goal each from Tomas Plekanec, Siarhei Kastsitsyn (power play in the third) and Mark Streit.

Net-minder Christobal Huet stopped 35 of 37 shots for the Canadiens, who have won six of their last seven games against the Capitals.

Washington's Nicklas Backstrom (power play in the second) and Alexander Semin both scored once.

Olaf Kolzig was beaten five times on 21 shots for the Capitals, who are last in the Eastern Conference and have dropped three of four.

Montreal was 2 for 5 on the power play and Washington went 1 for 4.
