NHL: Detroit 4, Edmonton 2

DETROIT, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Tomas Holmstrom put Detroit out front with an early second-period goal Monday as the Red Wings posted a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Chris Chelios, Mikael Samuelsson and Kris Draper also had goals for the Red Wings. Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Lidstrom each had two assists, and Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek made 18 saves.

Shawn Horcoff and Andrew Cogliano scored for the Oilers, who lost their first game of the season after wins over San Jose and Philadelphia. Dwayne Roloson stopped 31 of 34 shots in the loss.

With Oilers defenseman Steve Staios in the box on a hooking call, Holmstrom sent a loose puck inside the right post to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead 27 seconds into the second period.
