MLB: N.Y. Yankees 4, Toronto 1

TORONTO, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Mike Mussina threw 5 2/3 shutout innings Wednesday in carrying the New York Yankees to their seventh straight victory, 4-1 over Toronto.

New York remained five games behind Boston in the American League East and missed out on a chance to get closer when the Red Sox rallied in the ninth inning to defeat Tampa Bay.

The Yankees' lead in the wild card race remained four games over Detroit.

Mussina (9-10) gave up five hits before being relieved by Edwar Ramirez with two away in the sixth.

Rookie Joba Chamberlain took over in the seventh and Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 26th save.

Dustin McGowan (10-9) took the loss, giving up four runs on only three hits in five innings.

Hideki Matsui doubled home a run in the first and Alex Rodriguez scored in the same inning on a wild pitch.

The other two New York runs came in on a double by Robinson Cano in the fourth.
