LAS VEGAS, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- LeBron James scored 31 points Sunday as the United States beat Argentina, 118-81, in the gold medal game at the FIBA Americas tournament in Las Vegas.

The U.S. team was unbeaten in 10 games, and qualified for the 2008 Olympics.

James was named the competition's MVP after shooting 76 percent from the field Sunday -- when the United States also got 20 points from Dwight Howard and 16 from Carmelo Anthony.

"Even though I do not like to single guys out, LeBron's performance today was probably one of the best ones in an international game that an American player has had," said Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. "He had a big-time performance today (but) we are proud of the effort all our guys gave."

Luis Scola scored 23 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the floor for Argentina, which also lost to the U.S. in the second round.
