European Solheim qualifiers announced

MACCLESFIELD, England, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Nine golfers, including world No. 3 Annika Sorenstam, have been selected for the European team for the 2007 Solheim Cup in Sorenstam's native Sweden.

In addition to Sorenstam, Suzann Pettersen, ranked No. 6; Catriona Matthew, No. 24; and Sophie Gustafson, No. 31, were automatic qualifiers on the strength of their world rankings.

Five other players -- Gwladys Nocera, Trish Johnson, Bettina Hauert, Laura Davies and Becky Brewerton -- made the team based on the Ladies European Rankings.

This year marks the 10th time that Davies qualified for Solheim Cup play. Sorenstam and Johnson will be participating for the eighth time and Gustafson for the sixth.

Pettersen and Matthew are each headed toward their fourth Solheim Cup and Nocera in her second. Hauert and Brewrton qualified for the first time.

European captain Helen Alfredsson is to announce her three captain's picks Tuesday in Stockholm, Sweden.

The U.S. team is to be finalized after this week's LPGA tournament.

The 2007 Solheim Cup is scheduled for Sept. 14-16 at Halmstad Golfklubb near Gothenburg, Sweden.
