MLB: Chi. Cubs 5, St. Louis 3

CHICAGO, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Daryle Ward hit a grand slam homer Saturday afternoon to help the Chicago Cubs beat St. Louis, 5-3.

The blast -- Ward's first homer of the season -- came after Derek Lee's RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, when Chicago scored all its runs.

Lee had three of the four hits for the Cubs, who remained atop the NL Central with their second straight win in the three-game series.

Winning pitcher Sean Marshall (6-6) gave up two earned runs and five hits in five innings. Ryan Dempster earned his 19th save this season.

St. Louis scored on solo homers by Juan Encarnacion, Brendan Ryan and Albert Pujols. All three players had two hits for the Cardinals, who have split their last four games.

Loser Anthony Reyes (2-12) yielded four hits and five earned in six innings.

The contest was delayed by rain for 61 minutes in the bottom of the eighth.
