MLB: Chi. Cubs 2, St. Louis 1

CHICAGO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Jacque Jones belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning Friday afternoon as the Chicago Cubs edged St. Louis, 2-1.

Jones' fifth homer of the season pulled the Cubs into a first-place tie with Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Jones, who has been benched and booed during a lackluster season, also made a great catch on Brendan Ryan's fly ball in the Wrigley Field ivy in the fifth.

Ryan Theriot had two hits for the Cubs, who have won two straight.

Winner Rich Hill (7-7) gave up one run and just three hits in seven innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Ryan Dempster earned his 18th save.

St. Louis' lone run came on a solo homer by Albert Pujols in the top of the sixth. He had two of the Cardinals' four hits.

St. Louis had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Loser Braden Looper (10-10) gave up two earned runs and four hits in six innings.
