Sharapova leads favorites into semis

CARSON, Calif., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The top four seeds, led by No. 1 Maria Sharapova, Friday reached the semifinals of the East West Bank Classic at Carson, Calif.

Sharapova, seeking her second title in as many weeks, defeated Elena Dementieva, 6-3, 6-4, in the third round. Dementieva is a former East West Bank champion.

No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic advanced by ousting Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. Ana Ivanovic was a 6-4, 6-4, winner over Maria Kirilenko, and Nada Petrova moved on with a win over Virginie Razzano, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1.

Sharapova will face Petrova, and Jankovic meets Ivanovic in Saturday's semifinals.
