MLB: Tampa Bay 7, Detroit 1

DETROIT, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- James Shields allowed a run on five hits over seven innings Wednesday as Tampa Bay cruised to a 7-1 victory over Detroit.

Dioner Navarro contributed three hits with a home run, his second in as many nights from the ninth spot in the order.

Shields (9-7) walked no one and struck out nine, helping the Devil Rays end a three-game losing streak.

Chad Durbin (7-4) suffered the loss, giving up three runs over 4 1/3. After missing five games with a shoulder injury, Gary Sheffield returned to the lineup and had a double in four at-bats.

Detroit's lone run came on a homer by Placido Polanco.
