Claudio Vargas (8-2) yielded three runs on five hits in six innings.

Barry Zito (7-10) surrendered seven runs in 5 1/3 innings, as San Francisco lost for the eighth time in its last 11 games.

Omar Vizquel collected three hits, drove in two runs and scored once for the Giants.

The Brewers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, when Braun and Hart both hit two-run homers.

Vizquel and Dave Roberts each drove in a run in the fifth to cut the Brewers' lead to 4-3, but Milwaukee came up big with three runs in the sixth.

Barry Bonds, who needs two home runs to tie Hank Aaron's all-time MLB record of 755, had the day off. He is positioned to reach the milestone before a home crowd, with the Giants set to play their next seven games at AT&T Park -- beginning Monday when they open a four-game set with Atlanta.
