World No. 7 Robredo beat in Germany

STUTTGART, Germany, July 16 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Tommy Robredo was beaten in straight sets Monday during first-round play of the $757,000 clay-court Mercedes Cup tournament in Germany.

No other seeded players were scheduled Monday in the tournament, which gets into high gear Tuesday with 11-first-round matches.

Robredo, who had climbed one spot to No. 7 in the world in the men's rankings released Monday, was ousted by Gael Monfils, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Three qualifiers also advanced as Marin Cilic had little trouble with Benjamin Becker, 6-3, 6-2; Boris Pashanski rebounded for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez; and Jiri Vanek blitzed Ivan Navarro Pastor, 6-1, 6-1. Also, Fernando Verdasco stopped Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal, ranked No. 2 in the world, is the top seed for the Mercedes Cup. Fourth-seeded David Ferrer is the tournament's defending champion.
