KILDARE, Ireland, July 8 (UPI) -- Colin Montgomerie Sunday closed with a 5-under-par 65 to capture the European Open Golf Tournament at Kildare, Ireland.

His overall total was 11-under 269 -- one-stroke better than Nicklas Fasth (70).

"After nearly two years of a dry spell, it's great to be back," said Montgomerie. "You wonder if it's ever going to happen again. The last two holes, I got fortunate. I was in the hazard at the last and couldn't ground my club and then I holed a five-footer for par, so I had to work for it."

Second-round leader Pelle Edberg (66), Gregory Havret (68), Anthony Wall (65) and Peter Hanson (68) tied for third place at 9-under 271.

Third-round leader Soren Hansen (72) tied for seventh at 8-under 272.
