MLB: Detroit 12, Cleveland 3

DETROIT, July 5 (UPI) -- Carlos Guillen drove in four runs Thursday as Detroit clobbered Cleveland, 12-3.

His three-run homer in the bottom of the third gave the winners a 5-2 lead, and was one of three Detroit round-trippers.

The others were hit by Gary Sheffield and Placido Polanco.

Magglio Ordonez had two runs, three hits and one RBI. Sheffield had two runs, two hits and three RBI, Sean Casey hit a two-run double, Polanco had three runs and three hits, and Craig Monroe added one RBI for the Tigers, who had 17 hits.

A pitcher's duel between winner Justin Velander and loser C.C. Sabathia (12-3) never materialized.

Verlander (10-3) allowed three runs -- two earned -- and six hits in seven innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Cleveland's Victor Martinez drove in two runs, one with a solo homer in the first.

A run scored on Verlander's second inning wild pitch, and Martinez had two hits for the Indians, who have dropped two straight.
