Sharapova advances at Wimbledon

LONDON, June 30 (UPI) -- Former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia Saturday beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-3 in a third-round match at Wimbledon.

The start of Saturday's play was delayed by rain, which later washed out all men's matches.

Also Saturday, defending women's champion Amelie Mauresmo of France, the fourth seed, topped Italy's Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2.

Both matches were interrupted by rain, with six other women's matches suspended until Monday.

No matches are scheduled Sunday.

"It's a weird situation, because you know the rain is coming," said the 20-year-old Sharapova, a two-time Grand Slam champion.

She won Wimbledon three years ago.

"You're just thinking you might be a match point up and you have to go and wait to finish the match. It's a little bit of a tense moment."

Mauresmo, also a two-time major titlist, beat Justine Henin in both last year's Wimbledon and Australian Open finals.
