Chakvetadze, Hingis ousted at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England, June 29 (UPI) -- Anna Chakvetadze and Martina Hingis were both upset Friday in third-round play of The Championships at Wimbledon.

Top-seeded Justine Henin, No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and seventh-seeded Serena Williams advanced in Friday's play as the year's third Grand Slam saw the bracket for the Round of 16 begin to fill.

Chakvetadze, seeded eighth, dropped a tough 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 decision to 31st-seeded Michaella Krajicek while No. 9 Hingis was dumped 6-4, 6-2 by Laura Granville.

Henin continued her dominance with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Elena Vesnina and will next go against No. 15 Patty Schnyder, who managed a 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 win over Alona Bondarenko in her third-round match.

Jankovic was forced to rally for her 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Lucie Safarova and earn a fourth-round match with 18th-seeded Marion Bartoli, who was a 6-3, 6-2 winner Friday over No. 16 Shahar Peer in a small upset.

Williams was the most impressive on the day, dropping one game in a 43-minute dismantling of Milagros Sequera, 6-1, 6-0. Williams draws No. 10 Daniela Hantuchova in the fourth round. Hantuchova recorded a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 over 19th-seeded Katarina Srebotnik on Friday.
